Dispatches from the 21st Century

Angels’ Wings

In memory of Ivo Andrić

When Allah,

the Compassionate, the Merciful,

created this world,

It was a perfect sphere,

as smooth and unblemished

as its ideal.

But, while the earth

was still damp and soft

from the hands of God,

the Fallen One,

with talons forged

to scourge the heart of God,

Scratched deep ravines

and rivers in her flawless face,

sundering the land,

dividing the people

and loosing discord.

Then, Allah, in loving pity,

but bound by his own Law,

Dispatched his Angels

to the aid of man.

The servants of the High,

seeing His children

teetering and tormented

on the edge of chasms and abysses,

spread their wings for them to cross.

So next time you cross a bridge,

tread softly for you walk on Angel wings.

The Secret to Living the Longest Life?

If you want to live to a ripe old age, start making and keeping friends now. New research from Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia shows that having a strong network of friends is even more important to longevity than having a close family.

Reuters and HealthDayNews report that older people who have a strong social network of friends are less likely to die than those who are more lonely. Surprisingly, relying on children and other relatives for social support does not lead to a longer life. While many studies have shown that elderly people who are connected with others live longer, very few have focused on the effect of specific types of relationships and longevity.

In this 10-year study of almost 1,500 Australians who were at least 70 years old when the study began, the team examined each participant's social networks. Such factors as sex, age, health and smoking status, all of which could influence longevity, were included. Those who reported having better social networks of friends were more likely to be alive at the end of the decade-long study period than those who had fewer confidants.

From a Theory of Everything

Evolutionary physchology made it clear that there are indeed universals in the human condition.

The second law of thermodynamics tells us that in the real world disorder always increases. Yet simple observation tells that in the real world life creates order everywhere; the universe is winding up not down.

The Greeks had a beautiful word, Kosmos, which means the patterned whole of existence, including the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual realms
