Kevin Chilton Will the real St. Valentine stand up

Like all pre-mass communication celebrities, St. Valentine' identity is a little blurry. So much so, that it has never been established for which of the 3rd century martyrs associated with the 14th of February the first official Saint Valentine's Day in 496 AD was declared. Was it the Bishop of Terni (then called Interamna), the Valentine who died in Africa or the priest imprisoned and executed in Imperial Rome. Folk history, it seems, chose, the young priest who “betrayed” the Emperor Claudius… Continue

Kevin Chilton Dusting off the Crystal Balls

It’s that time of year again; the season for scrying the murky mesh of probabilities that will help determine our future. And of course we techies are renowned for our unerring ability to completely miss the target, as the following examples show:

  1. “This ‘telephone’ has too many shortcomings to be seriously considered as a means of communication. The device is inherently of no value to us.” —

Kevin Chilton St Nick & Black Pete are in Town

So, I’m out shopping in town on what I thought was a normal Saturday afternoon, when suddenly the city goes medieval on me (check out the videos I uploaded).

The streets are suddenly full of black-faced characters in brightly-coloured clothing throwing sweets at me, and when I arrive in the Grote Markt, there’s some geezer dressed as an Archbishop or something with a gang of what look like clowns jiving it up on the balcony.

Now I know the Dutch love their festivals, but what

hugh Phew! It's all go coming up to Samhain

I have begun to feel webs of synchronicity building up again in the last few days. It must be the crazy Samhain spirits making themsleves felt already. E.g. I had lamented the absence of woodpeckers and buzzards from the forest paths I cycle through daily to work. This was in one of those conversations generally lamenting a sort of end of the world or Gotterdämmerung - not to mention Ragnarok. Anyway, a day thereafter I took a turn in the forest and lo and behold a majestic buzzard with huge win… Continue

Kevin Chilton Samhain

Samhain, (pronounced SOW-in, SAH-vin, or SAM-hayne) means "End of Summer", and is the third and final Harvest. The dark winter half of the year commences on this Sabbat.

It is generally celebrated on October 31st, but some traditions prefer November 1st. It is one of the two "spirit-nights" each year, the other being Beltane. It is a magical interval when the mundane laws of time and space are temporarily suspended, and the Thin Veil between the worlds is lifted. Commun

Kevin Chilton Where's My Head At?

It is little short of spooky how, sometimes, whats going on in your head can be so eleglantly echoed in the words of an unknown writer. Several times in recent weeks I have been reminded that there is still something magical about words.

The first is an article in the Saturday Guardian Review 28.07.07 entitled Ghost Writing in which Hilary Mantel, reflecting on the enduring resonance of the story of Orpheus and Eur

Kevin Chilton Nijmegen Night-thoughts, or what becomes of you when you live alone

Without a woman or children, a heterosexual man in our society can go a long-time without a human touch.

I seem so laid back and understanding about love and relationships, but this is because my heart has forgotten how to truly engage and can no longer feel the sweet suffering of love. I have achieved the serenity of a phantom at the feast.

I have always been considered as a lucky man, seeming to always land on my feet no matter how desperate a situation. But for me this is no

Kevin Chilton Like a Rolling Stone

Dear family & friends

I am currently in mid-relocation from Belfast in Norn Eyeland to Nijmegen in the Netherlands. So, for the next week or so I will be only intermittently in the Net. In fact it's only due to the kindness of my landlord who is letting me use the wireless internet in his cafe that I can talk to you at all.

Anyway, I will try to keep in touch and will post some photos n the next few days and endeavor to stay in touch.

Tot Ziens
